There are actually four classes of fire extinguishers, A through D, and each classification is able to extinguish a specific type of fire. Classes A through C will extinguish fires based on what is in the liquid or gaseous content of the fire. Class D extinguishes fires due to flammable metals in the liquid or substance. There is also a special type of fire extinguisher called mono ammonium phosphate which is a more powerful type than monochloroethylene (or Methylene Chloride). Monoammonium phosphate is used on electrical equipment and electric fires.

Class A fires involving organic materials will not be easily put out by Class A fire extinguishers because they have chemical components that react with the oxygen in the air. These chemical ingredients are alkaline or acidic in nature and will cause suffocation. This is why it is important that fire extinguishers with this type of chemical component are placed in places like fireproof cabinets, and in some areas near water sources.

The next two classes, B and C, have different chemicals in their composition than do Class A fire extinguishers. B and C extinguishers are required to be kept in good working order. The parts may need to be changed occasionally. If the fire extinguisher is maintained properly then it should last many years. It is important that owners know what types of fires they are extinguishing and how frequently.

Finally, there is the class of rating fire extinguishers. They are usually the most powerful type of fire extinguishers available. Fire extinguishers of this class have components that are made from metal, which does not burn, so they have to be used with a spark ignition device, flammables, or organic solvents. You will find these products at fire departments all over the world, and they are usually the fire extinguishers used in hospitals.
